I have suspected for years that the quality and objectiveness of the reporting at npr has been deterioriating. And now we see the corrupt and sinister practices of surreptitiously substituting propaganda for news that has now come to light at the CPB, the criminal activities of the former chairman, and the multiple dimensions of the effort — from the top, the replacement of editors, the story selection, or the subtle shift in emphasis or outright abdication of journalistic integrity, for example don gagne’s reporting of the bush campaign in 2004 was positively fawning, and consisted almost entirely of reading the talking points handed to him by the campaign staff. where is the insight? where is the journalism?
we all know how it works. it has insidiously crept into every avenue of information available to the american public, and like kudzu, slowly choked out every breath of independence. first the commercial media, having lost its way as a cost center, chartered in the public interest, in exchange for the use of the public airwaves, having become controlled by the need to generate profits, abdicated any claim to journalistic integrity in favor of simple entertainment.
