It is refreshing to know that I am not the only person to have noted
the often unconscious but profound effects of the media culture we
find ourselves immersed in.
I imagine the history of materialism is a bit longer than that of the
television, but the latter is one of a number of new technologies that
have served to amplify and reinforce purely materialistic and
self-indulgent messages in qualitatively new, more effective, and
insidious ways.
Let’s hope that we as individuals, families, and as a
society learn to develop defenses against this onslaught, and remember
to listen for the quieter spiritual messages of faith, hope and love.
